LOOse that Resolution

RESOLUTION: ORIGIN: from Latin resolutio: from resolvere: loosen, release, settle.”

RESOLUTION: IN MUSIC: “the move of a note or chord from dissonance (inharmonious, tense, unresolved) to a consonance (pleasing, final, lacking tension against the center key).”

RESOLUTION: COMMON USE: “a firm decision to do or not to do something.”

We all love a good firm declaration, a hard line drawn in the sand. It feels good. Like music moving into consonance, we have struck our final note. We are resolved—“lacking tension against the center key”.

But are we really?

Most resolutions are made with great tension—judgment, guilt, fear, obligation. Though they seek the center key—tonal alignment, integrity—they have skipped a bar. In our countdown to the New Year, we jump ahead to the satisfying final note. Resolution’s “release”, the very origin of the word itself, remains unsung and far from the integrity it seeks to harmonize. Our resolution falls flat.

The release is that letting go—something I have been encouraging in many of my recent posts. It was being called out long before Solstice but certainly peaked at Winter’s onset. The Angel of Death was asking for everything we were willing to give, and some that we weren’t. The grief was palpable, uncontainable.

But it prepared us for this night. It freed the future from our past that we may make this year’s declarations in earnest and as a true act of power. We have “loosened” the past from our bones and “settled” our accounts. This is the way to enter into a marriage, and isn’t that what in essence our vows to the New Year are, or should be— declarations of Love that come from a healed place, untethered to its past?

I say yes.

So before you raise your glass tonight and sing your song to the Auld, let 2018 lift from you. Lend it the exhale that makes it lighter, that sets it free. And then from there, with all your Love, gaze straight into the eyes of 2019 and simply say, “I do.”

Happy New Year everyone! I love you so very much!! 💘
